Virtual Brain Twin for Personalised Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders

Virtual Brain Twin for Personalised Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders

Background

Mental disorders are a widespread and a growing problem in the European Union - 0.3 per cent of the population are affected. Unfortunately, only around 30 per cent of patients respond to standard medication. In order to improve treatment, it is important, among other things, to be able to predict the individual response to antipsychotics and to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the biochemical and biographical causes of schizophrenia.

Research Questions and Objectives

The "Virtual Brain Twin for Personalised Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders" project coordinated by EBRAINS AISBL aims to develop individual virtual brain twins for patients with schizophrenia. Neuronal microcircuit simulations, mathematical analyses, innovative applications of artificial intelligence and findings from psychiatric care and clinical studies will be used for this purpose.

A Virtual Brain Twin platform is being developed to support clinicians in optimising the selection and dosage of medication and to incorporate alternative treatments such as brain stimulation and lifestyle changes. By utilising innovative technologies, this platform will connect the levels from molecules to small and larger networks to the whole brain. Embedded in the European research infrastructure for digital neuroscience, EBRAINS, the Virtual Brain Twin platform is initially planned for neuroscientists, clinical researchers and mathematical modellers. In future, it will also be accessible to clinics and patients in order to achieve better treatment outcomes.

The sub-project based at the Center for Life Ethics focuses on the ethical and scientific-philosophical implications of the Virtual Brain Twin project. These range from the specific handling of the various individual data to very fundamental questions about what we understand by mental illness and how technological developments can change our image of human beeings.
