Ulysses contracts and neurotechnology:
Accounting for Unintended Effects of Neuromodulation
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is well established as a treatment for movement disorders. In rare cases, stimulation results in impulse control disorders, which is addressed by adjusting the stimulation. However, in some cases, patients are reluctant to have stimulation modified.
This presentation addresses the conceptual, ethical, and legal challenges of consent for stimulation-induced behavioral changes in the context of stimulation-induced behavioural changes, particularly as both applications of DBS and DBS technology change. It considers how the ethical and legal challenges can be addressed both with technological innovation as well as legal innovation.
