Björn Schmitz-Luhn studied law in Cologne and Phoenix, USA. During his clerkship at the Cologne Court of Appeals, he worked abroad at the Department of Public Safety in Fairbanks, Alaska and the German Embassy in Washington, D.C.. He is a licensed attorney.
Academically, he first worked as a research assistant, later as an Academic Councilor, at the Institute for Medical Law at the University of Cologne. There, he participated in various interdisciplinary research projects on medical law, including the German Research Foundation’s group FOR 655 on prioritization in medicine. In 2014, he received his doctorate with a thesis on distributive justice in health care, which was awarded the Adolf Laufs Dissertation Prize.
Since 2014, he served as general manager and scientific coordinator of ceres, the Cologne Center for Ethics, Rights, Economics, and Social Sciences of Health, an interdisciplinary research center at the University of Cologne. In October 2021, he moved to the University of Bonn to coordinate the newly emerging "Center for Life Ethics". His research focuses on legal and particularly interdisciplinary current topics of medical and social law, the ethical, legal and social aspects of health care and the digital transformation of medicine.
